Phoenix Mom Sentenced to Life for Suffocating Her 3 Young Children and Staging Their Bodies

In a harrowing case that shocked Phoenix, Rachel Henry has been sentenced to life in prison after suffocating her three young children and staging their bodies to make it appear they were sleeping. Read the chilling details.

In a case that has left the Phoenix community reeling, 27-year-old Rachel Henry has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murders of her three young children. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office confirmed the sentencing on February 4, 2025, after Henry pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and dangerous crimes against children.

The tragic incident dates back to January 20, 2020, when the victims’ great-aunt called Phoenix Police to report that the children were found lifeless inside a home near 24th Street and Baseline Road. The victims were identified as 3-year-old Zane Henry, 23-month-old Miraya Henry, and 7-month-old Catalaya Rios.

A Chilling Confession
On bodycam footage, Henry initially told officers, “I put them down to take a nap, and I didn’t check on them, and I thought they were sleeping.” However, her story unraveled during the investigation. Prosecutors revealed that Henry eventually admitted to suffocating her children “one by one.”

Henry reportedly told detectives that she placed her hand over her 1-year-old daughter’s mouth during playtime and held it there until the child stopped breathing. When her 3-year-old son attempted to intervene, Henry allegedly overpowered him, sang him a lullaby, and suffocated him as he fought back. Her 7-month-old daughter was fed a bottle until she fell asleep, only to have Henry place her hand over the baby’s face until she tragically passed away.

A Heartbreaking Deception
After the killings, Henry staged the bodies of her children on a couch to make it appear they were peacefully sleeping. The horrifying scene was discovered when the children’s father and great-aunt arrived at the home.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell expressed her disbelief and heartbreak over the case, stating, “I’ve dedicated my career to protecting children, and it’s hard to comprehend how any parent could take the life of their own. Thank you to the prosecution team for ensuring justice was served for these three innocent children.”

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the unimaginable tragedies that can unfold behind closed doors. As Rachel Henry begins her life sentence, the community continues to mourn the loss of Zane, Miraya, and Catalaya—three young lives taken far too soon.
